15 Android Jelly Bean Tricks

Whenever a new android update is announced by Google, the techie guys tend to know the changes that have been made in the current update. A major update of Google was to android 4.2 jelly bean. Here are few jellybean tricks and features you may be interested in. Have a quick look here!

1. Capture and share screenshots

With android jelly bean, taking screenshots has become just clicking buttons. Prior to jelly bean and ICS, taking screenshot was not easier. We need to have some special apps for this purpose. Few apps even needed that the phone is rooted. But now it’s a built-in feature. You just need to hold the volume down button and power button simultaneously for few seconds. Your screenshot will been taken, and you can easily share it just by pulling down the notification panel and tapping share option. Some phones may require you to hold power button and hold (or long press) home button.

2. Reboot to safe mode

If you are geek in playing with all the latest apps available for android and at point of time you get into trouble with these apps, this jelly bean option may come to your rescue. Hold the power button until power off menu comes. Now hold the power off option, android will ask you if you want to reboot to safe mode. Clicking on OK will disable all the third party apps ( apps which you installed and did not come with the phone when you bought it ). Now you can find which apps were troubling you and delete them forever. When you reboot again, all the remaining third party apps will be restored.

3. Unlock Android BeanFlinger

Screensavers are called as daydreams by Google. You can turn on the daydream mode by going to settings> display>daydream on. Now when your phone is docked or charged, you will see your customized screen instead of the boring one. You can select your photo as screensaver but android also has the BeanFlinger screensaver for you hidden inside. To unlock it go to settings> about phone> tap continuously on the android version. You will see the BeanFlinger appear and if you tap and hold it, flying android screensaver will appear. Next time you visit to daydreams option you will find BeanFlinger activated there.

4. Folders in home screen

Do you use lot of apps? Do you create shortcuts to those apps in your home screen? Then you know how the home screen gets cluttered up with these shortcuts. No more from now on. Now you can create folders in home screen so that it stays clean always. This is how to do it. Create an app shortcut in home screen. Now create another one. Tap and hold the second one and drag it over the first app shortcut. You will see a dark circle in the background, release the app now. You folder is created and you can tap and rename it. Now you can drag any app on to this folder and even rearrange the apps inside the folder.

5. Find developers option in jellybean

In all the previous versions of android you could directly go to system settings to find the developer option. But for more safety this option is hidden in jellybean. But you can enable it by going to settings> about phone> find build number there. Now tap on the build number 7 times. A small notification will pop up telling you that you are the developer now. Now once again visit your settings menu, you will find developers option right there.

6. Do a barrel roll

Have you tried googling ‘do a barrel roll’ in your computer? If yes then you know what it is, if no then just go and have try. Now this thing is even supported in android jellybean. Open your default android browser, Firefox or chrome then go to google and type ‘ do a barrel roll’ (without quotes) and see the magic.

7. Resizing widgets

After buying your android phone, customizing your home screen is important for faster access and for better look. With  jellybean you can take this customization to next level using resizable widgets. To resize tap and hold the widget in home screen then just release it.You will see dark boundaries around the widget which you can drag to resize it. If you can’t find dark boundaries, it means that the widget is not made by the developer in such a way that it can be resized.

8. Photo in notification bar

Isn’t it cool to have your photo on top of your phone so that others can know who the owner is! You can add your photo in the notification panel  along with your name. Open your ‘Contacts’ app, at the top you will find an option called ME . Tap on it and set your photo and details. Now pull down the notification panel and you can find your photo and name right at the top left.

9. Owner info in lock screen

What if you lost your phone, someone found it and  wants to return it to you but could not find your contact details. In jellybean you can set your contact details in the lock screen. Go to settings,  then to security and then owner info. Here you can set short description about you to show it in the lock screen. So next time your phone is lost, you may hope someone return it to you.

10. Widgets in lock screen

Now in jellybean you can directly access your emails, messages, clock, Whatsapp messages, calendar and other apps while the screen is still locked. Here is how you can add widgets in locked screen. Press power button, your screen should be locked now. Press power button to unlock it then swipe downwards. Now swipe from left to right. You will see a plus button. Tap on it, enter the lock pattern and you will be able to add widgets to lock screen. To remove widgets swipe down in locked screen, swipe sideways, tap and hold on the widget you want to remove, drag in upwards to remove. Adding and removing widgets may be done in slightly different way depending on the phone you are using. This feature may be of some privacy concern to few users but will be fine for those who have their phone always with them.

11. Improved notification shade

Jelly bean introduces notification pane with improved interface. Along with running tasks, you can also find many setting shortcuts here. You can swipe sideways on the notifications to remove them. You can also tap on the bridge icon at the top how to remove all the notifications from the notification panel. Long pressing any of the settings shortcut, will take you directly  to that particular app settings. For example, when long pressing the wifi shortcut you will be directly taken  to your wifi settings. When you long press an active notification, you can get info about the app which gave rise to that particular notification. This feature can come in handy when you see a particular notification and don’t know which app is responsible for that notification.

12. Closing recent apps

Long press on home button or home icon, you will find  all the apps you recently opened. You can swipe sideways for removing the recent apps. You can also tap on each recent app to close it or go to the app info. Selecting ‘app info’ will take you to application settings of that particular app where you can force stop or kill it.

13. Turn notifications off for individual apps

Heard it right! With android jellybean it’s now possible to turn notifications off for particular apps but keep it on for other apps. You know how much it’s important to be notified from apps like Whatsapp, messenger, email. Turning notifications off should not let you missing the important once. You can do this by going to app settings of the particular app which you want remove from your list of receiving notifications. Just go to settings> apps> find your app and tap> turn off notifications.

14. Calling Wi-Fi network as mobile hotspot

This option will be helpful to those who use internet through Wi-Fi on their android devices. You may have noticed that when you connect on any WiFi network, your apps get automatically updated in the background. But when you designate a WiFi as mobile hotspot, their will be no background updates without your prior permission. If you have made proper settings then data usage will be restricted. This may save you lot of data and thereby monthly bill.

15. More interesting jellybean tricks

  • Long-press an app or widget icon, then fling it upwards. It will be removed from home screen.
  • Long-press on any app icon, you will find options to uninstall the app and also find the app info.
  • Improved voice search with support for Google now cards in jellybean.
  • Improved keyboard experience. Now access commonly used special symbols by just long-pressing the full stop key. Prevents you from getting head ache!
  • Have you observed that whenever we install any app, its icon gets added in home screen. It’s a good thing but if you don’t like, disable it by going to play store> settings> unmark add icon to home screen.
